Hello SPT Friends!

Welcome to our first SPT Newsletter. I’m excited to share a quick recap of everything happening at SPT plus some tips to help you stay on top of your game.

It’s beginning to feel like Fall here in the New Orleans area! Fall sports, such as volleyball, football, swimming, and cross country, are in full swing. Soon, it’ll be time for basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Good luck to all of our athletes who are mid-season right now as well as those who are about to start their seasons. SPT is always here for all of your sports training needs. Read on to learn about all of our new services.

TRAINING

If you’re a winter sport athlete (basketball, soccer, wrestling), don’t forget to schedule those last minute SPT sessions to ensure that you’re ready for your season. If you’re in your sport’s off-season (I’m looking at all my softball, tennis, baseball, track, and golf athletes), now is the time to get to SPT and take advantage of our Physical Therapist approved strength and conditioning program.

Have you worked out on our Proteus yet? We’re the ONLY facility in Louisiana to have this awesome piece of equipment that can be used for both training and testing. Our innovative machine offers three-dimensional resistance similar to an underwater effect. As a trainer, I love the detailed feedback I get from Proteus testing our athletes. I’m able to even better tailor your workouts so that we’re helping you perform at your best. For more information on what Proteus can do for you, click here.

Schedule your classes on the Mindbody app or here. Remember, your sessions never expire! If you have any questions about the status of your account, don’t hesitate to give us a call at (504) 885-8994.

NUTRITION

Whether you’re in-season or training in the off-season, proper nutrition is vital. Here are a few of my favorite after school or pre-game/meet/workout snacks that are easy to pack in your bag with the rest of your essentials.

  • Mixed berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries)
  • Low sugar granola bar
  • Trail mix
  • Single serving size peanut butter cup with apple slices
  • PB&J (light on the J) on whole grain bread

Don’t forget to stay hydrated! Aim to consume at least half of your body weight in fluid ounces of water per day. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, you should try to consume 70 ounces of water daily.

MINDSET

We’re a little more than halfway through the first nine weeks of school. If your grades aren’t exactly where you want them to be, now’s your chance to do your best on that upcoming test or assignment. Having a solid routine will help you manage your daily schedule. Are you winging it every day or are you intentional with your actions? I highly recommend using an appointment book to map out your day. Unlike a daily planner or calendar, an appointment book breaks your day down into 15 or 30 minute intervals. Use highlighters or different colored pens to categorize all the things you need to do throughout your day, such as school, homework, practice, workout, etc. Organizing your schedule this way will help you see exactly where you’re spending your time as well as what blocks of time you have available to take care of your top priorities. (Ahem…school) You can find an appointment book on Amazon for between $5-10. Hint – look for one that starts in July so it will take you through this school year.

RECOVERY

I am excited that SPT now offers some cutting-edge recovery services:

Assisted Stretching helps prevent injuries and promotes post game/workout recovery by offering multiple health benefits:

  • Increases your range of motion and flexibility, which aids in injury prevention
  • Increases blood flow to muscles as well as quality of sleep, both of which aid in post game/workout recovery
  • Releases tension and muscle tightness

Normatec Compression Boot sessions, complete with zero gravity chairs, can assist in the recovery process in several ways:

  • Increases blood circulation, which aids in reviving muscles and reducing swelling
  • Helps to combat post workout/game inflammation, soreness, and tightness

P.S. I tried the boots out myself, and I guarantee that you’re going to want to use this new service!

The Hypervolt Massage Gun features varying degrees and methods of pressure to get you feeling better by increasing blood flow to promote recovery following exertion, and releases tension in muscles and fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscles).

IN CONCLUSION … Please, please don’t ever hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. So that I may best serve you, I encourage you to let me know what you want and need every time you walk into the Southshore Performance Training gym!

Have a great week, and I look forward to seeing you guys at SPT!
