July 22 is National Be a Good Teammate Day. Here at Southshore Physical Therapy, we’re all about teamwork … and it comes in many forms. The clinic floor is run by a crackerjack team of technicians, and the front office is overseen by trained professionals who handle all of our accounts. Together, these two halves work in tandem to create one overall super team to provide the highest level of customer service.

And then there’s YOU! As one of our patients, you’re truly the MVP … and we want to thank you for allowing us to help guide you to the finish line!

Commitment. Whether you’re playing on the field or rehabbing on the clinic floor, every player on a successful team needs to be committed to the same goal. When everyone gives 100% and is “all in,” a mutual sense of trust is established and teammates know they can count on and even lean on each other when needed. “Commitment to the team, there is no such thing as in-between. You are either in or out.” (Pat Riley, Former NBA player and coach)

Cooperation. The members of a team are like the parts of a machine, and cooperation is the oil. So, we need to remember to apply it often and freely to keep everything purring like a kitten. Because, as we all know, when one part of the machine malfunctions, the whole mechanism can break down. “Gettin’ good players is easy. Gettin’ ’em to play together is the hard part.”(Casey Stengel, American Baseball Hall of Famer)

Creativity. We’ve all heard the expression “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Well, that’s certainly true of creative thinking in team settings. There will always be questions that need answers, and one concept or suggestion can give way to another. Therefore, everyone contributing to the idea bank often results in faster, more reliable resolution. “There’s no bad ideas when you’re brainstorming.”(Imagination Movers, award-winning family musical group from New Orleans, LA)

Communication. Mistakes, misunderstandings and dropping-the-ball moments are just a few of the issues that can result when team members don’t communicate well. And far too often, we associate effective communication with sending clear messages rather than receiving them. “The biggest communication problem is that we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. (Stephen Covey, award-winning author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People)

Consistency. Scoring the winning point, nailing a dismount, making a hole-in-one … everyone eventually gets their 15 minutes of fame. But who wants to follow a team that’s only on top of its game for 900 seconds of its career? The key to being a good teammate and maintaining an invincible team is performing at this same optimal level every time. “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. (Henry Ford, American industrialist and business magnate)
